What is Corrosion in Reinforced Concrete? What are the Causes of Formation? How to Repair?

1. Water Does Not Cause Corrosion, It Accelerates
The most important information about corrosion: Exposure of concrete to water is not a reason for corrosion. If the ambient conditions required for corrosion have been met, the fact that the concrete is saturated with water increases the rate of the reaction. In order to prevent corrosion, not only water, but also other factors should be controlled.

2. Corrosion Is A Chemical Reaction, It Can Be Prevented
Corrosion of reinforcement in concrete cannot be defined as a simple rust. The reinforcement in the concrete does not rust under normal conditions because the pH of the concrete is 13. As a result of this high alkaline environment, a protective, passive film layer forms around the reinforcement. This layer perfectly protects the reinforcement against corrosion. This protective film layer, which is even stronger than epoxy coating, can repair itself even when scraped. When it deteriorates (for this, the pH must go down to 10 and below), corrosion begins in the reinforcement. Corrosion is a chemical reaction. If the reasons that participate in the reactions, accelerate them and create the appropriate environment for the reactions are prevented, the corrosion is repaired.

3. Unclear Causes of Corrosion Cannot Be Permanently Repaired
There are two major factors that destroy the protective passive film layer around the reinforcement in concrete. One of them is the carbonation reaction. The reaction is summarized as the carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere moving into the concrete by diffusion and reacting with the calcium released as a result of the hydration of the cement. As a result of this carbonation reaction, calcium carbonates are formed. Calcium carbonate has an acidic effect and therefore the pH begins to drop. When the pH of the concrete decreases below 10, the protective passive film layer around the reinforcement deteriorates and starts to rust. The volume of the rusted reinforcement expands, this expansion creates an inside-out pressure in the concrete and the concrete cracks. Due to cracks, the reinforcement begins to be directly exposed to atmospheric conditions and corrosion continues rapidly.

The second major factor causing the deterioration of the passive film layer is chlorine attacks. Chlorine ions entering the concrete act as catalysts in corrosion reactions. The reason why chlorine ions stand out among the corrosion-inducing factors is that they are not consumed as a result of the reactions. Chlorine continuously participates in the reactions without being consumed. Corrosion begins after the concentration of chlorine ions by weight exceeds 2 per thousand compared to cement.

Corrosion, the cause of which is not properly analyzed, cannot be permanently repaired. Repair works performed without correct determination of the cause of corrosion and without correcting the electrochemical mechanism may accelerate corrosion.

4. The Success Criterion of Corrosion Repair is Longevity
Corrosion repair should not be applied as the removal of rust. The causes should be eliminated and thus its recurrence should be prevented. Otherwise, the reaction will accelerate and repeat. The success of corrosion repair projects depends on a detailed and rigorous diagnostic process to prevent this recurrence.

5. Detailed Identification of Corrosion Causes Is The Key To The Solution
If the diagnosis is not correct in corrosion repair projects, an accurate solution cannot be reached. There are many factors in the formation and speed of corrosion reactions. It is possible with the correct diagnosis to terminate and prevent these reactions. For example, if we try to repair a corrosion caused by chlorine attacks without taking action against the presence of chlorine, the system will collapse, corrosion cracks will show themselves again.
